Design Philosophy
RADAR Inc. is a full-service architecture office based in the Chinatown neighborhood northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Over 18 years the office has amassed a wealth of experience in a range of project types – commercial, institutional, civic, and single and multi-family residential. The team, led by Rachel Allen, AIA, is comprised of a group of strong thinkers and good listeners who believe in the power of design to transform and empower the creative lives of our clients.The office has long been on the forefront of new community-oriented growth in LA. We have helped our clients realize the potential of places such as Grand Central Market and Mariachi Plaza. We are proud that our team reflects the diversity of the city, and we not only elevate the design at these crucial urban sites but serve their neighborhoods first.Clients have come to realize that they are not getting a “product” when they enlist RADAR. In a regurgitated, image-heavy environment, our office eschews these methods of problem solving and instead employs new ways of considering tradition and modernity.We believe we can challenge the norms of urbanism and architecture in radical ways by recognizing certain fundamentals of design alongside the most pressing matters in our city.We are optimistic about the expanded role of the architect in the far-from-static world of real estate. In this way, we redefine former conventions of project type: all use is adaptive reuse; all workplaces are ‘creative’; and even a single-family home has multi-family and live-work aspects. There is no project without its users and misusers; there is no inherent value to the formal object itself. We are driven by our enthusiasm for the mutual transformation that occurs between an architectural project and a community.

		<description>Testimonials

	Julie ZemelSelecting Rachel Allen and RADAR for my ADU project was a great choice. After interviewing various architects, Rachel’s team stood out for their cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing design, along with solid contractor recommendations. Her expertise in navigating city requirements saved us time and money during construction. I also appreciated that they included all my requests within budget, making me feel like part of the team.&#38;nbsp;

Amy Schuessler, California State ParksWorking with Rachel Allen and the RADAR team on the Bowtie project was not only a very successful effort, but they made it an enjoyable process as well. They were thoughtful, thorough, and responsive to our requests and needs throughout the process and were instrumental in the successful planning and facilitation of our community workshops. Their ability to listen, synthesize information, and translate that to design resulted in a project that will not only meet operational needs but also reflect the desires and needs of the future users of the park.&#38;nbsp;

John Flores, Metro Los Angeles, Senior Manager Facilities MaintenanceRADAR’s team of experts was attentive, thorough, complete and provided detailed explanation of the nuances of the project approach . . . The thoughtful “nods” to details from the original California Spanish-Deco lobby into this new space was a very creative and ingenious touch . . . We immediately fell in love with the final result. Rachel’s team provided seamless, worry free and timely project deadlines and milestones . . . For our next tenant improvement project that requires high quality and higher caliber services, RADAR would be first on our list.&#38;nbsp;

Thea Graybill, Senior Planner, County of El DoradoThe staff with RADAR, Inc. are tremendously professional and have&#38;nbsp; superb level of expertise, listening skills, and responsiveness. I very much enjoyed working with and felt comfortable relying on RADAR, Inc. staff for the El Dorado County’s Permit Ready ADU Plans Project.
Ernest Fleischmann, Executive Director, Los Angeles Philharmonic, 1969-1998A gifted architect, with an excellent design eye and an uncanny ability to come up with solutions to tricky problems.

Laura Horn, Facilities Manager, GOAT, 2016-2017RADAR was able to take the GOAT business model and transpose that into an architectural design. The design process was incredibly smooth and that can be contributed primarily to RADAR's diligence and precise work product. . . I've never worked with an architect with such resolute attention to detail.

	Erika Green, Writer/ProducerI knew I was in good hands with RADAR at the helm of multiple projects I did to update my home. Their thoughtful approach to design made the effort a really fruitful collaboration where my thoughts and ideas were integrated in a cohesive way that honored the space, and elevated the space way beyond anything I could envision.

	Sabrina Burton, Attorney, Pajama LawRachel's excellent communication skills helped avoid confusion and conflict, and I always felt that I knew where the project stood and where it was headed. . . [C]areful documentation of our conversations with the builder saved me thousands of dollars by the end of the project.

	David Kipen, Libros Schmibros Lending Library
Rachel Allen is the ideal architect to re-ensconce you in a brand-new library. Words can’t do justice to the beautiful, welcoming space she designed for us..it’s a pleasure to work in, and our visitors are staying much longer. I know Rachel designs all kinds of spaces, but, if possible, I think she takes library commissions as a special responsibility and joy.&#38;nbsp;

Megan Whitmarsh and Matt Salata, Fine ArtistsRachel is. . . an excellent communicator: direct, patient and unruffled. She was great in dealing with both the city bureaucracy and selecting and working with our contractor. Her ease and equanimity helped the project progress with little stress.
Kim Pesenti and Jonathan Williams, Writer &#38;amp; ArtistThroughout the process of building our house we felt comfortable that no detail would be left unconsidered by Rachel and her team. . . We had a sense that all potential problems had a good solution, even when one was not immediately apparent.
Amy Lippman, Writer/ProducerI cannot whole-heartedly recommend Rachel as an architect. I cannot because, well, what if my glowing endorsement ultimately resulted in her being unavailable to work on OUR next project? See what I mean? It's simply not in my best interest. So, for the record: she's just okay.

	This new ground-up home on the bluffs of Playa del Rey will replace the family home of the owner’s grandparents. A modest corner property, narrow and with sloped access on both street sides, provided constraints against which the design pushed, pulled, and ultimately found articulation of the values and spirit of the new owners, taking advantage of the vistas and the neighborhoods' naturally cool microclimate.

The playful, dynamic composition expresses the vibrant personality and enthusiasm of the family for their community and the joy of habitation, sitting lightly on the bluff and embedding itself into the ground.

The current generation’s family of occupants are beloved local restaurant owners, and required an expanded kitchen, with a cellar for fermentation and a vegetable and herb garden. Food is the heart of the home, with kitchen and dining room given pride of place, and direct connectivity to courtyards for easy entertaining, including a direct flow between indoor and outdoor kitchens.

The family values nutritional health and wellness which led to the incorporation of unique features such as an onsen (Japanese style bath) and a personal gym.

The design ingeniously separates common areas for shared forms of living (food, library, and bathing) from more private, quiet sleeping zones. The pinwheel plan organizes these around a series of major and minor courtyards and balconies that allow for natural ventilation intake to every area of the home, and a vertical vent stack (doubling as a stairwell).

The sculptural approach, carved by the ocean breezes, also nods to the streamline moderne deco period found in the original planning of the neighborhood, transforming it into a complex composition that expresses the home's components volumetrically and compositionally, utilizing simple materials (stucco, aluminum windows, expressed concrete).

The underpinning approach is a single-room deep plan layout, guided by the goal of reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling. A narrow floor plate increases natural daylight while cross ventilation reduces cooling loads and energy usage. The HVAC system itself is a series of dispersed heat pumps, allowing for the maximum efficiency and supported by onsite solar panels.

The thematic use of radiused corners throughout the home sculpturally expresses the home’s integration with and reliance on the flow of ocean breezes, the prevailing wind direction coming off of the bluff to the west. These curves welcome the wind into the home through the entry and side courtyards, through interior clerestory windows and the vertical stack (which doubles as the home’s main central stair).

In the garden, storm water is collected from higher roof surfaces and decks, then into the stormwater collection system where it is allowed to naturally percolate back into the ground.

The incorporation of a small residential elevator and a private guest suite on the ground floor means that the home will remain intergenerational for years to come.

	Tomat Kitchen is the brainchild of two doctors-turned-restaurateurs. The restaurant focuses on natural ingredients, fermentation, and simple accessible dining from morning to night. The restaurant occupies the ground floor of a commercial corner in Westchester, LA, as well as a rooftop garden area, complete with views of the city and planes to LAX.
For this 60-seat concept, RADAR has developed custom casework and furniture selection in addition to standard architectural coordination. A large open hearth kitchen is on full display, and casework will showcase a variety of fermentation jars. The look and feel balances a neutral palette of wood tones with the deep vibrance of greens and reds, reminiscent of the restaurant’s name and nature itself.

Adaptive re-use conversion of an underutilized big box store (a former Babys “R” Us) into a world-class climbing gym in Torrance, California for Touchstone Climbing. More than half of the 37,400 square foot space had its roof raised up to 40 feet to maximize the interior height for top-rope climbing and bouldering.

Radar worked in close collaboration with Touchstone’s team of experts to fit out the rest of the facility with their signature support spaces—including locker rooms, competition training zones, instructional areas, cardio and weightlifting workout zones, and retail space. Brightly color blocked standing seam metal cladding references the diverse urban and natural landscapes in this vibrant coastal city of southern Los Angeles County.Credit: Jim Simmons Photography
