Aging-in-Place ADU
2020TYPE: Residential
CLIENT: Julie Zemel
SIZE: 618 sqft
COLLABORATOR: Peck (Structural, Civil)
This ground-up 1-bedroom ADU is located in a Northeast LA neighborhood historic preservation zone. Commissioned during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a safe place for the client’s mother, it is informed by universal accessibility principles. The double-gable roof nods to the Victorian-era home, which dates to the 1880s. Other key features include wide passageways, a moveable kitchen island, curbless shower and sink area with room for an attendant when necessary, and a generous floor plan with vaulted ceilings and north-facing skylights. Designs which allow for “aging in place” provide long-term social sustainability.
