Avenue 28 ADU
2020TYPE: Residential
CLIENT: Julie Zemel
SIZE: 618 sqft
COLLABORATOR: Peck (Structural, Civil)
This 618 sqft free-standing backyard home harkens back to one of the earlier terms used for an ADU—a “granny flat.” Located in Lincoln Heights, in an HPOZ district, this is RADAR’s take on the universal design ADU. With a contemporary nod to the existing Victorian home, the double-gable roof unit takes into consideration that an elderly resident has different needs while trying to live independently. This 1-bedroom, 1 ADA-compliant bathroom features minimal thresholds, contrasting color surfaces for intuitive use, and an open plan with high ceiling and north-facing skylights for natural light.
